Transition to kura/school from early childhood is a well-researched topic and kaiako are aware of the importance of developing a smooth transition between the two contexts. Rather than focusing on how this can be done, this professional development explores contexts to create a shared understanding of what is fundamentally important for children as they begin this transition.

This PLD event is aimed at early childhood and kura Kaiako who have children transitioning.

Learning Objectives:

Kaiako develop a shared understanding of the learner as a holistic being whose identity, language, culture, and relationships shape their transition experience.
Kaiako understand the central role of relationships (whanaungatanga) in supporting positive transition experiences.
Kaiako explore how reciprocal, collaborative approaches across kura/school and ECE settings can support continuity of learning and wellbeing.

Presenter: Jo Ward, Lecturer / Kaiako - Te Rito Maioha

Jo has worked in a range of settings for 30 years and has a passion for supporting social and emotional competence. Her knowledge and skills developed through working directly with a range of learners and alongside GSE in the implementation of strategies and plans to support tamariki. She has completed an inclusive education paper as part of her post graduate studies.

Presenter: Leena Rebello, Lecturer / Kaiako (Primary) - Te Rito Maioha

Leena has been a resourceful Primary School Teacher with 25 years of experience. She believes in striking a balance using traditional as well as modern collaborative teaching approaches in the classroom. Leena believes that students can thrive well in an environment where they feel safe and accepted. Leena believes in establishing an open communication and positive relationships with students. She thinks that providing a supportive environment is key to developing academic growth in students. Leena’s teaching philosophy is driven by engaging in ethical, respectful, positive, and collaborative professional relationship with tauira and the teaching community. She also strives to encourage the understanding of cultural diversity with manaaki and empathy.
