Our Bachelor of Education integrates the latest national and international research with our recognised expertise in bicultural teaching, learning and education.
This level 7 undergraduate degree is designed to examine current educational issues, thinking, human development and learning, advocacy, ethics, curriculum development, social and cultural identity through a bicultural, social justice and rights lens.
International students enrolled in this programme gain an internationally recognised qualification and insight into New Zealand’s education sector.
Graduates gain a deep and relevant understanding of effective education enabling them to pursue careers in policy, community planning, resources development, child advocacy, leadership, management, youth or social work and more.
Completion of the Bachelor of Education degree offers a pathway to further study including Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE and primary) and postgraduate programmes.
This programme does not lead to teaching registration and certification by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. If you want to become a registered teacher in New Zealand, you need to apply for either our Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) or Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) programmes.

This 3-year undergraduate degree is an online-only programme offering you the flexibility to study within your community. Your study will be self-directed, but you will be required to engage with lecturers and other students through our online study portal.
You will be supported during your studies by our passionate and committed programme leaders, lecturers and pouako. Domestic students are also welcome to seek in-person support at one of our 11 Regional Education Centres.
Due to this bachelor’s flexible learning experience; online-only, Immigration NZ will not grant a visa for this programme as it does not have a face-to-face component.
International students can only study this programme from their home country and access support from our lecturers and pouako online.
Assessment
This programme is assessed by internal assessment. Assessments are varied and include online conversation participation, essays, reports, PowerPoint presentations, multimedia presentations and other assessment types.
To be eligible for programme admission, you must:

Be at least 17 years of age if you are a domestic student; or 18 years of age if you are an international student.

International students are required to show proficiency in English by achieving an IELTS 6 overall (no band lower than 5.5) or an Academic PTE minimum of 50 (no band lower than 42)
NZ residents schooled outside of New Zealand may need to provide other evidence of their English language proficiency.

What is a verified copy?
A verified copy is a photocopy of your original document signed as being a true and accurate copy by
a Justice of the Peace (JP), solicitor, church minister, kaumātua, police officer, school principal, Member
of Parliament or Te Rito Maioha teaching staff member. You can find a list of Justices of the Peace in the
Yellow Pages of the telephone book or at Royal Federation of NZ Justices’ Associations
Documents required to submit an application
1. Primary ID
You must supply a verified copy of one of the documents below:
- New Zealand Birth Certificate issued on or after 1 January 1998 carrying a unique identification number
- New Zealand Passport
- Overseas passport (must include relevant visa/residency permit)
- New Zealand Emergency travel document
- New Zealand refugee travel document
- New Zealand certificate of identity (issued under the Passports Act 1992 to non-NZ citizens who cannot obtain a passport from their country of origin)
- New Zealand certificate of identity (issued under the Immigration Act 1987 to people who have refugee status)
- New Zealand citizenship certificate
2. Secondary ID
You must supply a verified copy of one of the documents below:
- New Zealand Driver’s licence
- 18+ Card
- Community services card
- NZ student photo identification card – from another tertiary institution
- NZ employee photo identification card
- NZ electoral roll record
- Inland revenue number
- NZ utility bill, issued not more than six months earlier.
This programme consists of 12 (30-credit) courses, delivered at 4 courses per year.
