When you arrive in our REC you will see our ataahua carving that welcomes you to our takiwā ako. Te Whariki a Tane: Tane (patron of teaming) is positioned in the centre and the two manaia kaitraki (guardians) positioned on either side, represent kaiako nurturing and leading tamariki into the world. Te takarangi (double spirals) are symbolic of nga tamariki, new experiences and ideas. Te Takarangi are protected between Tane and nga manaia. Te rito patterning strengthens the symbolism of protection. Te Whariki below serves as the platform for learning and the whariki above represents our learning principles and kaupapa. (Carver: Alex Whitaker. 2012. “Te Whariki a Tane” is carved from Totara and locally sourced paua and ON (bubu).

Our kaumatua

Matua Justin Harming offers our takiwa a wealth of knowledge and cultural support to enable us to reflect our commitment to the bicultural kaupapa of Te Rito Maioha. With our Kaumatau Justin, Matua Mauraka Edwards’ support and our yearly visit to Noho Marae we continue to uplift our Kaupapa and strengthen our relationships with Puketeraki marae members.

We collaborate and plan as a team and aim to present an environment that feels warm, and inviting and reflects the values and beliefs of Te Rito Maioha.Together we have created spaces and places that belong to us. to our tauira and our community. Our student visits to rural locations including Mataura, Gore, Queenstown. Clinton, Owaka, Tapanui, Invercargill. Cromwell and Wanaka are opportunities to promote and advocate for Te Rito Maioha and the services we can offer as we build and strengthen our brand across the motu. We always make time during the visit to form connections with centre management.
