Dunedin Education Centre | Ōtepoti takiwā ako

When you arrive in our REC you will see our ataahua carving that welcomes you to our takiwā ako. Te Whariki a Tane: Tane (patron of teaming) is positioned in the centre and the two manaia kaitraki (guardians) positioned on either side, represent kaiako nurturing and leading tamariki into the world. Te takarangi (double spirals) are symbolic of nga tamariki, new experiences and ideas. Te Takarangi are protected between Tane and nga manaia. Te rito patterning strengthens the symbolism of protection. Te Whariki below serves as the platform for learning and the whariki above represents our learning principles and kaupapa. (Carver: Alex Whitaker. 2012. “Te Whariki a Tane” is carved from Totara and locally sourced paua and ON (bubu).
