Early Childhood Education Wellington

We are widely recognised as one of the top providers of early childhood education courses in Wellington. This is shown through our NZQA rating, as we have gained the highest quality rating they offer.

We provide ECE courses in Wellington but also across the country through our 11 Regional Education Centres. Many of our courses are delivered predominantly online, giving you the flexibility to study from home.

Graduate Diploma of Teaching in Wellington
Many people undertake a bachelor’s degree before later deciding that they want to teach. In this case, you can register for our Graduate Diploma of Teaching, a one-year diploma that will qualify you as a kaiako. No matter what your previous course of study was, you can add on this qualification to start teaching young children|tamariki.

If you are a teacher who has worked overseas but is not eligible to teach in New Zealand, this paper will enable you to be allowed to work as a teacher here.

This course features a blend of practical experience, block courses, and online learning. As most of your education is completed at home, this is a flexible qualification that can fit in around your life. Alongside studying, you will have placements in early childcare settings where you can start implementing your new knowledge.

Diploma in Early Childhood Education in Wellington
Te Rito Maioha is proud to offer three unique diplomas in early childhood education:

  • NZ Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Aperfield Montessori)
  • NZ Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Home-based Care)
  • NZ Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Pasifika)

Whether you work in childcare, are a qualified teacher, or are an unqualified teacher, you can benefit from the learning in these diplomas. Each takes a different perspective on early childhood education to train you in a specific aspect of practice.

In conjunction with the Aperfield Montessori Trust, we have developed the Montessori diploma. Taught by Montessori-trained teachers, you will discover the fundamental concepts of Montessori learning and how to use these effectively in the classroom. The Pasifika diploma introduces students to Pasifika culture, language, spirituality, and identities and the effect of these on pedagogy. Finally, the home-based care diploma focuses on the theory and practice of delivering quality home-based early childhood education and care in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Each one includes a placement in an ECE facility so that you can begin working with children and developing your new skills in this setting. Most of the study is completed online, although the Pasifika and Montessori diplomas also require attendance at block courses.

Teacher Education Refresher (TER) Courses in Wellington
If you have not gained your full practising certificate five years after completing study, you may need to take a Teacher Education Refresher course. This will give you the chance to again start working towards your practising certificate.

ECE Degrees in Wellington
We are proud to offer three degrees through our Regional Educational Centre in Wellington:

Bachelor of Education (ECE) in Wellington
For those who want insight into how children learn and grow, cultural responsiveness, and the theory behind early childhood education, we offer our Bachelor of Education (ECE). Take this programme to develop your knowledge of children and education in Aotearoa|New Zealand.

This course does not qualify you to be a teacher. Instead, it is aimed at those in positions where they often interact with children. Use this degree to deepen your understanding for roles such as child advocate, ECE centre manager, policy analyst, and more.

If you complete this degree and then decide to become a teacher, you can later add on the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE).

Bachelor of Teaching in Wellington
We offer options for both primary and ECE teaching in Wellington, depending on your career goals:

  • Bachelor of Teaching (ECE)
  • Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)

These degrees incorporate blended learning with practicums so that you can gain experience in working with children|tamariki. Additionally, both programmes include field-based learning where you will gain practical experience in the classroom for a set number of hours each week. Learn new skills and techniques, and then put them into practice immediately. You will be able to study primarily online and then join with your cohort during block courses to share knowledge and learn from each other.

ECE Diploma to Degree Upgrade Programme
For those who have already achieved a diploma in ECE teaching and would like to begin a bachelor’s degree, we have the ECE Diploma to Degree Upgrade Programme. If you already have an ECE diploma and want to become a kaiako, this programme can allow you to do that.

Postgraduate ECE in Wellington
We offer a range of postgraduate programmes aimed at students who want to build on their teaching experience and further their understanding of ECE:

  • Postgraduate Diploma: Infant and Toddler Learning and Development – Specialise in working with those in the age group of three and under with this postgraduate diploma. You will be interested to find out how infants and toddlers develop, learn, and grow.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership (ECE) – Teachers who wish to become leaders in their schools may benefit from this postgraduate diploma. It is also suited to current leaders, as you can build upon your leadership practices through the blended learning approach.
  • Master of Education (ECE) – The Master of Education in Wellington is designed to teach you more about ECE leadership, infant and toddler pedagogy, inclusive education, and biculturalism.
