The Maramataka is the traditional Māori lunar calendar, deeply connected to Māori life and culture. It consists of 12 or 13 lunar months depending on where you are in Aotearoa, each lasting around 30 days. The Maramataka starts with the appearance of the Matariki star cluster in Pipiri (June/July), marking the arrival of the Māori New Year. Each month is based on the moon’s phases, which act as an essential guide indicating the best time for activities like planting, harvesting, fishing, and hunting. Different Iwi and Hapū have their own variations of the Maramataka, based on their own matauranga (Māori knowledge).
