Te Whakapapa o te Tāngata - The Lineage of People
Māori mythology is the blueprint of all life. Join us in unpacking this narrative in relation to foetal development so that we are reminded of one simple truth – it is the story of one whānau/family of which we are part of.
This PLD is intended for:
- All teachers working with tamariki in Aotearoa-New Zealand.
- All teachers working with indigenous learners.
- Teacher educators.
- Researchers of indigenous knowledge and perspectives.
- Tangata o te moananui a Kiwa – Pacific Peoples.
- Politicians whom wish to serve ‘our unified national and global family’.
- Medical practitioners and researchers.
- Neuro-scientist who wish to take up the challenges of exploring such narratives in relation to brain development.
- Seekers of knowledge.
This webinar PLD offers:
- A lens by which one may develop and understanding and appreciation that indigenous knowledge and narratives can be a credible source of information when utilised ‘with eyes wide open’.
- A means by which to safety explore the nature and intent of Maori myth in order to gain insights into unpacking other indigenous knowledge is a culturally appropriate manner.
- An avenue to understand the phrases and stages of Maori myth is relation to the stages of foetal development.
- A gentle reminder that our origins are shared, thus highlighting differences does not serve our family now, or in the future.

Ra joined Te Rito Maioha after working 17 years for another PTE where he thoroughly enjoyed his primary roles as visiting lecturer. Before this he worked 7 years in various roles with The University of Auckland. The highlights were as School Manager for Te Puna Wananga (Epsom) and Office Manager (Equity Office). Prior to moving to Auckland, Ra was with The University of Waikato also for 7 years where he worked in student support and the halls of residence.
As Pouako within Te Tairawhiti takiwā, Ra’s role is to support our tauira and team with Te Ao Māori; positive experiences and use of Te Reo Māori for our whānau; support with recognising, labelling and understanding tikanga; marae noho and networking; admin for Te Ahu o Te Reo, me wetahi atu mahi.
Presenter Alicia Savage, Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education). Pouako, Te Rito Maioha ECNZ
Alicia began her career in early childhood education 19 years ago. For the past five years, Alicia has been teaching Mātauranga Māori and early childhood contexts at Te Rito Maioha ki Manukau. Alicia is currently undertaking MEd with Massey University and is an advocate for agency and passionate about promoting teaching practices that honour the mana of every tamaiti. Central to her pedagogy are tikanga Māori values.
