Emma Rekareka

Lecturer

Kaiako

Auckland | Manukau

Role

Emma is part of the Bachelor of Education Teaching (Primary) team at the Manukau takiwā ako. In her role as a kaiako, she is committed to supporting and uplifting our tauira as they grow into confident, capable and culturally responsive educators. Her responsibilities involve, but are not limited to, facilitating engaging discussions, encouraging reflective practice, and guiding tauira through meaningful learning experiences that deepen their understanding of teaching and learning. Emma strongly believes in the power of shared learning - walking alongside our tauira on their educational journey while continuing to learn and grow, herself, as a kaiako. Her goal is to create a space where our tauira feel supported, challenged and inspired to thrive - not just academically but as future teachers who will make a difference in the lives of our tamariki.

Education Background

Emma brings almost a decade of experience as a primary school teacher, as well as nearly ten years at the Ministry of Social Development. In that role she managed hundreds of clients and facilitated workshops to support people into employment, study or upskilling opportunities. She also worked closely with clients facing significant financial hardship.

Research Background

Emma’s research focuses on improving educational outcomes for Pasifika and Māori students. Her previous work explored ways to close the achievement gap and better support Pasifika and Māori learners. Her postgraduate research specifically examined the challenges faced by high-achieving Pasifika students and the types of support that enable them to strive. Her interest in this field stems from personal experience - both through her own school journey and as a parent. Watching her eldest cub, a high achiever throughout primary and middle school, navigate the education system has deepened her passion for ensuring that all tauira, especially those of Pasifika and Māori backgrounds, are supported to reach their full potential.

Teaching Interests

Emma teaches because she believes in the power of education to transform lives. Her approach is shaped by the values of service, connection, and cultural responsiveness. She sees teaching as a journey we take together - one where kaiako support, guide, and learn alongside tauira. Emma’s motivation comes from knowing that she has the opportunity to make a real difference, not just academically, but in the overall wellbeing and confidence of each learner. The most rewarding part of teaching for Emma is witnessing those powerful ‘a-ha’ moments when tauira have made a connection and their eyes light up with understanding. Seeing them progress, smile with, and grow confident, capable educators reminds Emma why teaches. For Emma, it is a privilege to play a small role in helping tauira reach their goals. “Never see a need without doing something about it” - St Mary MacKillop.
