History of Te Rito Maioha Regalia

The green on the hood and stole symbolises Te Rito Akoranga

  • The growth of learning
  • The growth of new teachers

From the first shoots comes our limitless potential. Growth is the magic we experience on our journey and is the essence of life, the root of success.
If you look closely at the kōwhaiwhai patterns you will see the design element of the flax woven into the repeat pattern to emphasise the learning journey.

Students are encouraged to order graduation regalia through the Graduation Student Information form, sent in November of the final year of study.

Regalia Collection and Return

Your academic regalia will be available for collection at your local REC in the week before graduation. Academic regalia must be paid for before it is collected.

Regalia must be returned straight after the ceremony at the venue.

  • Gown: arms go through the slits
  • Hood: neckband can be secured under your tie or with pins
  • Trencher
    • worn with shorter peak to the front (degree students hold their trencher in front of them until they are capped and they then place it on their head)
    • Trencher tassel should hang on your left once capped
    • Embellishing your graduation regalia with garments of honour from your cultural tradition, korowai, taovala, lei, sari, etc, is a welcome enrichment to the colour of the ceremony. These are worn over the gown, and under your hood or stole. The korowai can be worn over the hood or under it, based on tauira personal preference.
