Our ECNZ Manukau Regional Education Centre (REC) is proud to offer a range of study options for those who interested in early childhood education courses in Auckland. We are recognised as amongst the best places to study early childhood in Aotearoa|New Zealand, with the highest possible quality rating by NZQA. Across all our Regional Education Centres and online, we now have over 700 students enrolled who have chosen to study with us to gain practical experience and high- quality ECE qualifications.

Our research-driven programmes are popular amongst those who would like to learn ECE to become teachers|kaiako and other childcare professionals. While many people come to us for ECE courses in Auckland, we have 11 Regional Education Centres in total spread throughout the country. Whether you want an ECE diploma or a full degree, we have courses available for you at our Manukau Regional Education Centre. Those studying ECE in Auckland often choose the Bachelor of Education to gain a solid understanding of education techniques. However, there are also early childhood and postgraduate diplomas to choose from. If you want to become a teacher|kaiako, the Bachelor of Teaching can enable you to do this in just three years. Which one you choose to study will depend on what you want to get out of the qualification.

Graduate Diploma of Teaching in Auckland
If you want to register as a teacher in Aotearoa|New Zealand, this one-year graduate diploma could be the perfect choice for you. Those who already have an undergraduate degree in another field can add on this diploma to embark on the path of becoming an ECE teacher. International teachers who aren't eligible to teach in Aotearoa|New Zealand often use this programme as a pathway to start teaching again.

This course is comprised of hands-on practice, online learning, and in-person block courses, offering the ultimate flexibility for those who want to do most of their learning from home. Put your knowledge into practice through the local field-based learning in an education setting.

Diploma in Early Childhood Education in Auckland
If you are interested in studying towards an undergraduate diploma in early childhood education, we have three options available:

  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Aperfield Montessori)
  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Pasifika)
  • NZ Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Home-based Care)

These diplomas are aimed at qualified teachers, unqualified teachers, and people that work in childcare alike. Each one has a different focus to enable you to learn in greater depth a specific aspect of teaching. Learn the world-famous Montessori teaching techniques, discover how to effectively engage with Pasifika students by understanding more about Pasifika ways of learning, or find out the best ways to care for children|tamariki at home.

All three options include a practical component whereby you will be working in an educational environment while you study. The main learning is done online, with the home-based care diploma being fully online, while the Pasifika and Montessori options include face-to-face block courses.

Teacher Education Refresher (TER) Courses in Auckland
Have you graduated from a teacher education programme but have not achieved your full practicing certificate within the last 5 years or are you returning to ECE after a lengthy break? TER is aimed at early childhood teachers who have not yet attained their full practising certificate.

If you are a teacher trained in primary school learning and want to gain a more thorough understanding of working with younger children, this programme can offer you those additional skills. Internationally qualified ECE teachers also may use this certificate as a way to familiarise themselves with Aotearoa|New Zealand’s learning environment.

Here at our Manukau REC, we offer a number of degrees for those wishing to deepen their teaching knowledge and practices.

Bachelor of Education (ECE) in Auckland
We are proud to offer a Bachelor of Education, the standard degree-level programme in the education field. It is a qualification that is suitable for individuals who want to further develop their knowledge and skills in the field of education, with a focus on early childhood education. Teachers undertake this course of study to grow their knowledge for a range of roles, including working as a policy analyst, child advocate, ECE centre manager and more. It does not qualify you to become a teacher|kaiako and is instead aimed at helping those in roles dealing with children develop a greater understanding of cultural identity and responsiveness, early childhood education theory, human development, social identity, and more. To become a teacher, you must study the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE) upon completion of this degree.

Bachelor of Teaching in Auckland
Our two Bachelor of Teaching options will help you to qualify as a teacher in New Zealand. The first choice you must make is whether you want to specialise in ECE or primary teaching, as we offer a Bachelor of Teaching for each:

  • Bachelor of Teaching (ECE)
  • Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)

Both are offered as blended learning experiences so that you can learn online in addition to attending some in-person block courses. They both comprise of online study as well as practical experience in an education setting. If you are interested in studying ECE teaching in Auckland you can, as long as you can find a ECE centre or school willing to take you on as a student teacher.

ECE Diploma to Degree Upgrade Programme
If you have an ECE teaching diploma and would like to gain a Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) degree, then this part-time programme was designed for you. This fully online course allows you to upgrade your diploma into a degree so you can work towards becoming a teacher|kaiako through self- directed learning.

Postgraduate ECE in Auckland
For those who wish to gain further skills in the field of ECE education, we also offer a variety of postgraduate programmes. Each has a different focus, depending on the knowledge you would like to acquire. Our postgraduate diplomas can also become part of your Master of Education degree, should you wish to continue further study.

  • Postgraduate Diploma: Infant and Toddler Learning and Development – Those who want to specialise in working with children|tamariki three years old and under may undertake this postgraduate diploma. If you have an interest in how infants and toddlers learn, you will enjoy the research-based learning in this course.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership (ECE) – If you want to develop your leadership skills within an ECE context, this course is for you. With a strong emphasis on work-based leadership practice within ECE, this programme blends online and face-to-face learning.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership (ECE) Trans-Tasman Initiative – This program has been developed to allow New Zealand and Australian ECE leaders to share knowledge from their distinct but similar ECE contexts.
  • Master of Education (ECE) – If you're considering studying towards a Master of Education in Auckland, we have the ideal option for you. This programme is fully online, which is handy for those who would prefer to learn from home. Study this course to increase your knowledge of inclusive education, infant and toddler pedagogy, biculturalism, ECE leadership and more.
