Te Rito Maioha’s commitment to ensuring the success of all its students is paying off, says Chief Executive, Kathy Wolfe.
‘Our overall 2017 qualification completion rate is 72% and our rate for Māori students is 69% and for Pasifika, 65%.
‘A third of the ECE teachers who graduate with us in a year are Māori and 10% are Pasifika.
‘These rates – published by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) – are very good, keeping in mind the average qualification completion rate for tertiary education organisations is 63%.
‘We are a mainstream, bicultural provider of initial teacher education and other early childhood education (ECE) programmes. We take our role as a provider of high-quality programmes very seriously, as shown by our completion rates and backed up by our perfect Category 1 rating for educational excellence.

Kathy says New Zealand needs many more qualified early childhood teachers.
‘At the moment, the country is short of about 1600 early childhood teachers a year, thanks to attrition and increasing demand for places in early childhood services.
‘Each year, more than 200 early childhood teachers qualify with us. That’s at least 40% of all the early childhood teachers who qualify in New Zealand a year.
‘We have great ECE programmes. We encourage prospective ECE teachers to study with us knowing they are supported by us and their employers, who know their student teachers will receive the very best education in early childhood teaching.’
