A diversity of digital smartness and young children's uses of digital tech in EC settings

This PLD draws upon a small qualitative case study involving young children and their uses of digital technologies in one early childhood setting. It identifies and examines the diversity of ways that children, and other people involved in their lives, might use digital technology as a means of initiating, facilitating and supporting learning. We define this as digital smartness. A socio-cultural perspective is used to recognise and examine this notion of children’s digital smartness. Digital technologies and learning is examined in terms of the social and cultural contexts of the young children with particular focus on the influences of family/whanau and the early childhood education setting.
This PLD event will be relevant to teachers/kaiako in early childhood settings.
At this workshop you will:
*Gain insights into children’s uses of digital technologies technology as a means of initiating, facilitating and supporting learning. *Develop an understanding from a socio-cultural perspective to recognise and examine this notion of children’s digital smartness in early childhood settings *Reflect on practice and the rapidly evolving world of digital technology.
Presenter: Sara Archard, Teaching and Learning Digital Leader | Kaiārahi Matihiko
Sara has been involved in early childhood, primary and tertiary education for around 20 years. In recent years, her work has included leadership roles in tertiary education. A key focus for Sara is learning and teaching in digital learning environments. A career highlight for Sara was being awarded in 2013 the Nola Campbell eLearning excellence award from the University of Waikato.
Presenter: Simon Archard, Programme Leader - Bachelor of Education | Kaiārahi Hōtaka - He Tohu Paetahi Mātauranga, Senior Lecturer | Pūkenga matua
Simon teaches the Bachelor of Teaching and Bachelor of Education programme and leads the Bachelor of Education team. This includes coordinating teaching, development, and monitoring of the programme.
Having taught as an early childhood teacher for several years, Simon has taught in the tertiary sector in a range of institutions. He plays an active role in course development and reviews.
