The TER programme is for early childhood teachers who have not gained
a full practising certificate. The programme could also be of interest
to primary-trained teachers who want to learn more about working in ECE
or internationally qualified early childhood teachers who want to learn
more about the New Zealand environment.
Te ara tuku
The TER programme comprises four four-week modules over a 20-week
period. It comprises three modules of self-directed online learning and
one supervised practicum module. There is a break of one or two weeks
between each module.
There are usually two intakes a year (in February and July), and the programme must be completed within one year.
The four modules are offered in the sequence below but can be
completed out of sequence within one year of starting. Students can go
on hold for up to one year.

The TER programme is designed for two groups:
- Provisionally certificated teachers who want to apply for
another provisional practising certificate six years or more after
becoming registered. The programme will assist those who have limited or
no teaching experience since completing their initial teacher education
qualification to become up to date on current education initiatives and
ensure they are well prepared to teach successfully.

ago or more and are applying to become registered. Qualified but
non-practising teachers are likely to have minimal teaching experience
within the compulsory education system since they completed their
qualification. This is because, for most teaching positions in New
Zealand, it is a requirement to have a current practising certificate.

There is no set weekly early childhood service attendance requirement
for this programme, but spending some time in a centre is recommended,
especially if you have not worked as a teacher for some time.
