This Level 8 qualification is suitable for professionals with a particular interest in infant and toddler learning, development and wellbeing who want to specialise in this area.

Multi-disciplinary theories and research from fields such as education, health and social services are used to support a holistic view of learning, development and wellbeing. The inclusion of relevant social services and agencies provides opportunities to develop interdisciplinary relationships.

This programme emphasises the importance of whanaungatanga (relationships), orangatanga (wellbeing), matapakinga (dialogue), and te taiao (the environment) in supporting positive outcomes for infants, toddlers and their whānau.

Students who graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma: Infant and Toddler Learning and Development – Pōkairua Tautara: te Akoranga Kōhungahunga me te Whanaketanga are eligible to staircase into a Level 9 master’s degree, with the four courses contributing to the first part of a master’s degree.

The programme comprises four 30-credit courses, each 18 weeks long, which can be completed over 1 year of full-time study or 2 years of part-time study.

For part-time study, students need to set aside up to 17 hours a week for directed and independent study, including online engagement. For full-time study, students need to set aside up to 34 hours a week.

To be eligible for this programme, students must hold a relevant NZQA-equivalent Level 7 degree/diploma in education or related fields. Students must be able to provide a copy of their academic transcript.
