Through the Bachelor of Education, you will gain a deep and relevant knowledge of current education issues, thinking, human development and learning, advocacy, ethics, curriculum design, social and cultural identity.

This Level 7 degree programme is designed for those who want to build or advance wide-ranging careers in policy, community planning, resource development, child advocacy, leadership, management, youth or social work, and more.

The Bachelor of Education programme draws on the latest national and international research and Te Rito Maioha’s recognised expertise in teaching, learning and education in a bicultural context. It examines education through a social justice, bicultural and rights lens for ākonga from birth to 18 years old.

Offshore international students will gain insight into New Zealand’s world-leading education sector and an internationally recognised qualification.

The programme offers a pathway to further study, including graduate early childhood & primary teaching qualifications and postgraduate programmes.

The Bachelor of Education is a 3-year full-time degree. It is taught entirely online and has no block courses or work requirements.

The programme comprises 12 courses. You will need to set aside approximately 36 hours a week for study.

Note: The Bachelor of Education degree is not a teaching degree and does not directly lead to teacher registration.

To become a teacher you should complete a Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) or Bachelor of Teaching (Primary). 

To pathway towards teacher registration you can complete this programme and then complete a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE) or Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Primary). Postgraduate options are also suitable on completion of this Bachelor of Education.

Admission requirements
Ngā hiahiatanga tono

To study in this programme, you must:

  • be at least 17 years old (or 18 years old for international students)
  • show the skills and ability to study at tertiary level, either:
    -University Entrance or better (or overseas equivalent), including the literacy and numeracy standards needed for entrance to a New Zealand university. See www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/awards/university-entrance
    -equivalent skills and ability gained through work or voluntary experience or other learning
  • show proficiency in English if English or te reo Māori is not your first language. The minimum requirement is Academic IELTS 6.0, with no band lower than 5.5, or PTE Academic overall mark of 50.

 

Only international students who are based offshore can study in this programme.

Immigration NZ will not grant a visa for this programme as it does not have a face-to-face component.
