Teachers in Gisborne and Hastings can build their te reo skills with the combined, holistic support of two leading bicultural education providers – Te Rito Maioha and Te Ataarangi.
Te Rito Maioha is a leading provider of bicultural early childhood and primary teacher education, and Te Ataarangi is at the forefront of Māori language revitalisation.
“We’ve combined our strengths to deliver the Government’s Te Ahu o Te Reo Māori programme in the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne rohe” says Te Rito Maioha Pouhere Kaupapa Māori, Arapera Card.
Te Ahu o te Reo Māori is designed to help all teachers from early learning to secondary, build skills and confidence using te reo Māori every day in their mahi with tamariki.
“We’ve chosen to deliver the programme holistically – a difference we’re proud of – combining face-to-face and online learning, with noho marae at the start and finish of the course,” Arapera Card says.
“It means teachers can practice and build confidence in authentic, positive environments, learning language as well as cultural practices – te reo me ōna tikanga.”
When the course is finished, teachers can continue to access Te Rito Maioha’s online te reo programme, He Pātaka Reo.
“Teachers who’ve completed the course say they’re feeling much more confident and capable weaving te reo into their mahi in centres and schools.”
Participants say that the learning experience has many benefits: “From a teaching perspective, it has helped me become more confident in my reo, in the way I kōrero with the tamariki and just being able to be more bilingual and confident with everything in te ao Māori,” one participant said.
